A mom texted me at nine at night. The PSAT was in the morning.
Last October a mom texted me at nine at night. Her daughter had mentioned, on the way upstairs, that she had signed up for the PSAT and it was in the morning.
Nothing had gone wrong. The school had announced it properly. It just never made it from a junior's backpack to the family calendar.
October is when the high school calendar stops being quiet, and almost none of it is set by your district. The dates come from College Board, ACT, the federal government and the UC, and they do not coordinate.
The PSAT/NMSQT is hosted by your school in October, on a day the school picks, and it is opt-in. Your student has to sign up. No confirmation email lands in your inbox.
The ACT is October 17, and late registration closes September 29. The SAT runs October 3 and again November 7, with registration closing October 23.
For seniors, October 1 carries the weight. The 2027-28 FAFSA is available to everyone by then, and the UC filing period runs October 1 to November 30. USC sets early action and early decision at November 1 and considers those applicants for merit scholarships. Common App says some colleges moved that date later last cycle, so read each college's own page rather than a roundup.
First progress reports land in October too, on each district's own calendar.
Our rule of thumb is six to twelve weeks of real prep for any standardized test. November 7 is just over six weeks out from the start of October, which makes this the last week the November SAT is a plan rather than a gamble.
