The findings, in plain English

College programs hold the top of the list. The seven schools at 100% are collegiate and dual-enrollment programs. Students there take college courses on a college campus. Polk State College Collegiate High School is at 93% and Chain of Lakes Collegiate High at 90%. Their English and math cells are blank because the state grades them on the parts they have, not on those tests.

Where test results exist, they sit near the ceiling. Pine View School shows 99% in English and 100% in math. West Shore Junior/Senior High School shows 95% and 100%, NeoCity Academy 97% and 98%, and Terra Environmental Research Institute 94% and 98%. The lowest math result on the list, 77%, belongs to Archimedean Upper Conservatory, which still earned 89% of its points.

Nearly every school here was an A before. Twenty-eight of the thirty carry an A in the file's earlier year as well. The two without one, Pensacola State Charter Academy and St. Petersburg Collegiate STEM High School, have no earlier grade on file, which is what a new school looks like. 274 Florida high schools earned an A in all.

The Florida Department of Education publishes school grades; these are the 2023-24 grades, the latest file the state has released. The first column is the share of available points a school earned, which is what sets the letter. Blank English and math cells are collegiate and dual-enrollment programs whose students take college courses, so the state grades them on other components rather than on those tests; a blank earlier grade means the school has no grade on file for that year. 274 Florida high schools earned an A, so this is the top of that group by points, and a school's absence means it is not in the top thirty.

What a Florida school grade is

Florida adds up points across several parts. They include English and math results, how much students gained, the graduation rate, and College and Career Acceleration. That last part counts students who pass a college course or an industry test. The letter comes from the share of the points a school earned.

That design is why a program with no state test results can still score 100%. If a school has fewer parts, the grade is the share of the points it could earn. A college program clears the acceleration and graduation parts almost by design.

What this list does not say

A school grade is about the points Florida chose to count. So two schools at the same percentage can look nothing alike. The ones at the very top of this list are small application programs. Most of them enroll only eleventh and twelfth graders.

The grade also lags. These are the 2024 grades, and a school can move. We show the earlier grade beside the current one for that reason: a school with an A in both years is steadier than one with a single A.

What a family should do with this

If a collegiate high school is near you, the question is a practical one: a student spends part of the day on a college campus, earns college credit, and gives up some of the usual high school. That trade suits some students and not others.

For a comprehensive high school, read the English and math columns rather than the letter. Those two numbers tell you how the school's own students are doing on state tests, which is the part of the grade a family can see in their own kid's work.

Method & sources: The figures are the Florida Department of Education's 2023-24 school grades for high schools: the percent of available points, the English and math achievement components, and the earlier year's letter grade the same file carries. We ranked the A-rated high schools by percent of points and show the top thirty. Collegiate and dual-enrollment programs often have no English or math result, because the state grades them on other components; those cells are left blank rather than filled in.
