The findings, in plain English

Five schools passed every core exam. Stuyvesant High School, the Bronx High School of Science, Staten Island Technical High School, the High School of American Studies at Lehman College and the math and science high school at CCNY all show 100% on English, Algebra I, Living Environment, Global History and U.S. History. Each one also graduated 99% of its class. These are New York City's screened and specialized schools.

Algebra I is where the list spreads out. English, Global History and U.S. History sit at or near 100% for most of these schools. Algebra I does not. Syosset Senior High School shows 99% in English and 82% in Algebra I. Herricks High School shows 97% in English and 86% in Algebra I.

Long Island and Westchester fill most of the list. Past the city schools, the list is suburban. Garden City High School is at 99.4%, Edgemont Junior-Senior High School at 98.6%, Jericho Senior High School at 98.2% and Scarsdale Senior High School at 98.0%. Keene Central School, up in the Adirondacks, is the one small rural school here, at 96.0%.

The New York State Education Department publishes these figures in its school report card for the 2024-25 school year. Each number is the share of students who scored 65 or higher on that Regents exam, which is the state's passing mark, and the first column is the average of the five core exams. Only schools reporting all five exams are ranked. The list shows the leaders: a school's absence means it is not in the top thirty, not that it did poorly.

How to read a Regents pass rate

A score of 65 is the passing mark on a Regents exam, so a pass rate is the share of test takers who cleared the bar. It does not say how far above the bar they landed. Two schools can both report 100% while their students sit at very different score levels.

The exams are not all taken in the same grade. Many districts give Algebra I in eighth grade, so that number can describe a group of middle schoolers rather than a senior class. The other four are high school courses. Our table averages the five exams a school reported, which is why a strong school with one soft subject still lands high.

What the list does not say

A pass rate is one window. It does not say where a school's graduates go, how many finish a four-year degree, or what the school is like to attend. The schools at the top of this list are mostly schools that choose their students, by exam or by town, and that selection shows up in the numbers.

The list is also a top thirty, so plenty of strong New York high schools are not on it. Absence here is not a verdict.

What a family should do with this

Look up your own school and read the five exams one at a time rather than the average. The soft subject is the useful one, because it tells you where the teaching or the pacing is thinnest. Algebra I is the most common soft spot on this list, and it is also the exam a student usually takes earliest.

If your student is heading into a Regents course where the school's pass rate is low, that is the year to add support, not the year after. And if you are comparing two districts, put their exam-by-exam numbers side by side instead of comparing one school's average to another's.

Method & sources: The figures are from the New York State Education Department's 2024-25 school report card, which reports, for each Regents exam, the share of students scoring 65 or higher. We averaged the five core exams -- English, Algebra I, Living Environment, Global History and U.S. History -- and ranked schools reporting all five; schools missing an exam are not ranked. Graduation rate is the state's four-year cohort rate. Algebra I is given in middle school in many districts, so its test group is not always a high school group.
