The seven Common App essay prompts for 2026-2027, unchanged again

As of October 2026: The Common App kept all seven essay prompts the same for the 2026-2027 season, which opened on August 1, 2026 with more than 1,200 member colleges. Prompt 7, the topic of your choice, is the one most students pick.

The table holds the seven prompts as the Common App publishes them. It does not hold a word limit, because the Common App's own pages do not state one in text we can quote.

The findings, in plain English

Nothing changed, so last year's draft still fits. The Common App said in February that the prompts would stay the same for the 2026-2027 season. A student who started an essay last spring is answering the same question this fall. Account rollover keeps what was already typed into My Common Application, the personal essay included, when the new season opens.

Prompt 7 is the most popular one. Topic of your choice was the most chosen prompt in the last full season, at 28% of essays, with the adversity prompt next at 23%. That is useful in both directions. An essay on prompt 7 is normal, not a dodge, and it has to stand out against all the other essays with no prompt to lean on.

The platform keeps growing. The season opened with more than 1,200 colleges and universities. 64 of them are new this year, and 23 of those are Illinois community colleges. More member colleges is part of why the average student now applies to more of them.

1 Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2 The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3 Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4 Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
5 Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6 Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7 Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

These are the prompts for the 2026-2027 first-year application, word for word, and they are unchanged from the season before. A college may add its own supplemental questions, which are not in this table. No word limit is shown, because the Common App's pages do not state one in text we can quote.

Each row is one figure the Common App itself published for the 2026-2027 season or the season before it. The member count appears in two different counts, and both are shown rather than merged.

What the seven prompts ask for

Six of the seven name a kind of story. One asks for a background, identity, interest or talent the application would be incomplete without. One asks for an obstacle and what the student learned from it. One asks about a time the student questioned a belief. One asks about gratitude. One asks about a moment that started a period of growth. One asks about a subject so engaging it makes a student lose track of time.

The seventh asks for nothing in particular, which is why it reads as the easiest and is the hardest to use well. Prompt 7 takes an essay on any topic, including one already written for another prompt. It gives a student no shape to hold on to, so the shape has to come from the story.

The word limit is not in this brief

We print no word count here. The Common App's essay-prompts page builds its prompt list and its word-limit widget with a script, and the limit does not appear in the page's own text, so there is nothing primary to quote. The same is true of the limit on the Additional Information section. Numbers for both circulate widely on other sites. They are not in this table because they are not on a Common App page.

The member count has two honest versions as well. The launch announcement says more than 1,200 colleges and universities. The end-of-season report, which counts a little differently, says 1,146 member institutions for the season just finished. Both are in the second table, and neither one is wrong.

What a family should do with this

Pick the prompt that fits a story the student already has, rather than hunting for a story that fits a prompt. The prompts have held steady for years, so the question is never which one is new. It is which one lets a reader meet this particular kid.

Then start, because the season is already open. The application launched on August 1, and a draft typed in now rolls over with the account instead of being lost. Writing to prompt 7 is a real choice, not a last resort.
