The College-Going Rate (CGR) is defined as the percentage of California public high school students who completed high school in a given year and subsequently enrolled in any public or private postsecondary institution (in-state or out-of-state) in the United States within 12 or 16 months of completing high school.

CDE builds the rate by matching California high school completers to National Student Clearinghouse enrollment records. We publish CDE's aggregate and hold no student-level data of our own.

How this board is built

The top 50 of 1121 California public high schools whose 2022-23 class had at least 100 completers, ranked by the 12-month rate. The floor is there because a class of forty moves several points when four students change their minds; CDE's 16-month rate for the same class is shown beside it, since it is the same students counted later, not a second measure.

CDE suppresses (*) any cell where the student population is 10 or fewer. Those 137 schools are excluded from the ranking — the figure exists and is withheld, which is not a zero. CDE publishes rates for 2092 public high schools in all.

What absence means

A school missing from this page either had fewer than 100 completers in the 2022-23 class, or CDE masks its figures because the class is small. Neither is a statement about the school. Every California public high school we hold a rate for shows it on its own page, ranked against nobody.
