Where San Bernardino County's high school grads get into the UC system

This table, in plain English

What it measures: for each San Bernardino County high school, how many admissions its graduating class earned to the six most selective UC campuses (Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Irvine, Davis), per 100 seniors. Higher score = the class graduated with more UC options on the table. It comes straight from the University of California's own school-by-school admissions counts.

How to read one row: Middle College High's 81 means its seniors earned 81 selective-UC admissions for every 100 students in the class. For scale, the median California high school scores about 18; the median San Bernardino County school scores 13.

The story in one sentence: San Bernardino has the most public-dominated table in this series — nine of its top ten charge no tuition — and its strongest results come from two small academies rather than the large comprehensives that carry most of the county's students.

One honest caution: the Reach Score is not an admit rate. A student admitted to three UC campuses counts three times — it measures the breadth of options a class earned, which is why an exceptional school can score above 100. The full definition is below the table.

1. Nine of the top ten are public. Only Aquinas High School (26) breaks into the top ten from the private side. No other county in this series is this lopsided.
2. The county's two best results come from small academies. Middle College High (81, 70 seniors) and the Cobalt Institute of Math and Science (55, 175 seniors) are the only San Bernardino schools above 50 — both small, both public.
3. The big comprehensives carry the students, not the scores. Ruben S. Ayala in Chino Hills posts the best large-school result at 45 from 669 seniors, and files the county's largest application load at 1,175. Etiwanda graduates the biggest class in the county — 852 seniors — and scores 15.
4. Redlands converts better than anyone above it. It turns 35% of its UC applications into admissions, against 26% at Ayala and 31% at Middle College. Its 40 comes from a much smaller application volume.
5. The county median sits below the state's. 13 against about 18 statewide. Read alongside the conversion column: San Bernardino students apply to fewer campuses than their coastal counterparts, which lowers the score and raises the hit rate at the same time.
