Do Nevada's public universities require the SAT or ACT in 2026?

As of October 2026: No. All 3 Nevada public universities we checked are test-optional: a score is considered if sent, but not required (University of Nevada, Las Vegas, University of Nevada, Reno and Nevada State University).

Nevada's public university system sets minimum admission standards that can be met by GPA, SAT, or ACT, but none of the three NSHE universities requires applicants to submit a test score for admission as of fall 2026/2027 — all are test-optional.

The statewide rule

Test-optional. Set by Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents, covering current NSHE admission standards (Board of Regents Handbook Title 4, Chapter 16, Rev. 324, 08/26); the page names no specific entering term.

“Students seeking admission to the universities must have: At least a 3.0 (weighted) grade point average in the required high school courses for admission” — nshe.nevada.edu

NSHE's Board of Regents Handbook (Title 4, Chapter 16, Section 4) sets system-wide minimum first-year admission standards that can be satisfied by a 3.0 weighted GPA in the required high school courses, OR a combined SAT of 1120 (1600 scale, tests March 2016+), OR an ACT composite of 22, OR a Nevada Advanced High School Diploma. Because the GPA path alone satisfies admission, submitting a test score is optional at all three NSHE universities. Verified 2026-10-08 by downloading the PDF and extracting text locally (WebFetch's own reader could not parse it); confirmed by UNLV's and UNR's own admissions pages, which restate the same NSHE-wide GPA/SAT/ACT thresholds.

Nevada System of Higher Education: Optional, fall 2026 and fall 2027 first-year applicants. Same optional policy at all three NSHE four-year universities (UNLV, UNR, Nevada State University); none currently labeled varies_by_campus since all three are test-optional. Source

What this means for your family

Optional describes the checkbox, not the outcome. At test-optional colleges that publish both numbers, students who sent a score were admitted at a higher rate than students who did not, and 115 colleges nationally still require one. Take a free mock SAT and a free mock ACT, prepare for the whole test over 6 to 12 weeks, and decide college by college whether to send the score.

Method: for each state, the flagship and the public universities with roughly 8,000 or more undergraduates. Each policy label was read from the university's own first-year admissions page (or the state or system regulation), quoted verbatim, and re-checked by a second pass, October 2026. "Required" means a score is required of most first-year applicants (exemptions in the notes); "test-optional" means a score is considered if sent; "test-blind" means a score is not considered even if sent. Community colleges and private colleges are not covered. Policies change: the page carries the term each page named, and the report is refreshed each October.
